LumaVoice User Guide

1. Getting Started

When you first open LumaVoice, you'll be guided through a quick interactive setup to personalize your experience.

Onboarding (First Launch)

1. Welcome & Name — Enter your name to personalize greetings and the overall experience.
2. Choose Your Voice — Pick from Child, Teen, or Adult voice. Tap any option to hear a preview saying your name.
3. Try It Out — Tap demo tiles to build a short sentence and hear it spoken aloud. This is your first hands-on practice with the tile grid.
4. Pick Your Interests — Select 3 or more interest packs (Animals, Sports, Art, Music, Food, Family, School, Outdoors, Gaming, Stories). These personalize which categories and tiles appear first.
5. Celebration — See a summary of your choices and tap "Start Communicating" to enter the app.

Subscription Screen

After onboarding, a subscription screen will appear. LumaVoice offers a 7-day free trial so you can explore every feature at no cost.

• During your trial, tap the X button in the upper-right corner to close the screen and start using the app.
• After your trial expires, you'll need to choose a subscription plan to continue.
• You can also subscribe at any time from Settings → Subscription.

2. Main Screen Overview

The main screen is your communication hub. Here's what you'll find:

3. The Gear Menu

Tap the gear icon in the top-right corner of the main screen to access these options:

• Phrase History — View and replay previously spoken sentences
• Online sentence polish — Toggle AI-powered grammar correction on/off
• Add Custom Tile — Create a new tile with your own word and emoji
• Usage Insights — View communication statistics and progress
• RBT/BCBA Mode — Enable or access therapy tracking mode
• Modeling Mode — Toggle guided communication modeling for caregivers
• SLP Dashboard — Professional speech-language pathologist tools (SLP role only)
• Settings — Open the full settings screen

4. Building Sentences

Building sentences in LumaVoice is simple and intuitive:

1. Tap Tiles — Tap any tile to add it to the sentence strip at the top of the screen.
2. Review Your Sentence — Watch your sentence build in the strip. Each tile's word or phrase is added in order.
3. Speak — Tap the Speak button to hear your complete sentence spoken aloud.

Quick Actions

• Undo — Remove the last tile added
• Clear — Clear the entire sentence and start fresh

Phrase History

Every sentence you speak is automatically saved. Access your history from the gear menu to replay any previous sentence with a single tap.

5. Using the Keyboard

For custom messages that aren't available as tiles, use the built-in keyboard:

1. Tap the Keyboard button on the main screen
2. Type your message in the text field
3. Tap Speak to hear your message spoken aloud
4. Tap Clear to start over, or Done to return to the main screen

6. Categories & Tiles

LumaVoice includes over 1,050 pre-made tiles organized into 14+ categories:

Navigating Categories

• Tap a category in the category bar to view its tiles
• Scroll horizontally to see all available categories
• Categories are automatically reordered based on your interests and environment profile
• Emergency is always first for quick access

Recent Tiles

A "Recent" bar can appear above the tile grid showing your most recently used tiles for quick access. Toggle this on/off from the gear menu or Settings.

7. Custom Tiles

Create unlimited custom tiles with your own words and emojis for fully personalized communication.

How to Create a Custom Tile

1. Tap the gear icon (top-right corner) and select "Add Custom Tile"
2. Fill in the fields:
   • Label — The text displayed on the tile
   • Emoji — An emoji to represent the tile visually
   • Speak Override (optional) — Custom pronunciation different from the label
3. Tap Add Tile to save. Your new tile appears in the Custom category.

8. Smart Predictions

LumaVoice learns your communication patterns and suggests the next tile you're likely to need.

• How it works: After you tap a tile, prediction tiles appear suggesting what typically comes next based on your history.
• Adapts over time: The more you use LumaVoice, the smarter and more accurate predictions become.
• Toggle on/off: Go to Settings → AI & Predictions to enable or disable smart suggestions.

9. AI Sentence Polish

AI Sentence Polish automatically improves your sentences with proper grammar, articles, and natural phrasing before speaking them aloud.

Examples

• "I want cookie" → "I would like a cookie, please."
• "I go store" → "I am going to the store."
• "me happy today" → "I am happy today."

How to Enable

• Quick toggle: Gear menu → "Online sentence polish"
• Settings: Settings → AI & Predictions → Online Sentence Polish

10. Environment Profiles

Environment Profiles automatically reorder your categories based on where you are and what you're doing. Switch profiles to surface the most relevant tiles for each situation.

Tap the environment emoji on the left side of the main screen to switch between profiles. You can also manage profiles in Settings → Environment & Routines.

11. Learning & Literacy

LumaVoice tracks which tiles are being mastered and supports literacy development.

Learning Mode

• Tracks how often each tile is used independently
• Tiles progress through stages: New → Practicing → Mastered
• Visual indicators show mastery level on each tile
• Toggle in Settings → Learning & Progress

Literacy Support

• Optional text labels beneath tile emojis reinforce reading skills
• Phonetic hints can be displayed to support letter-sound connections
• Adjustable settings for different literacy levels

12. Modeling Mode

Modeling Mode is designed for caregivers, therapists, and educators. When enabled, the caregiver can demonstrate how to use tiles to build sentences, and LumaVoice tracks the modeling interaction separately from the user's independent communication.

How to Use

1. Open the gear menu and tap Modeling Mode
2. Demonstrate tile usage by building example sentences
3. The app records modeling interactions separately from independent use
4. Tap Modeling Mode again in the gear menu to turn it off

13. Emotion Regulation Tools

LumaVoice includes built-in tools to help identify, express, and manage emotions.

Access emotion tools from the Emotion button on the main screen's action bar.

14. RBT/BCBA Therapy Mode

For therapists, educators, and caregivers, LumaVoice includes a professional therapy tracking mode with session management and data collection.

Accessing Therapy Mode

1. Tap the gear icon
2. Select Enable RBT/BCBA Mode

15. SLP Dashboard

The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Dashboard provides professional-grade tools for clinicians working with AAC users.

• Client overview: See communication statistics, most-used tiles, and usage trends at a glance
• Progress reports: Generate detailed reports for documentation and insurance
• Goal alignment: Connect therapy goals to actual communication data
• Access: Set your role to SLP in Settings → Professional Tools, then access via the gear menu

16. Coaching Tips

LumaVoice can display contextual coaching tips to help caregivers support communication development.

• Tips appear as brief suggestions during app use
• Based on evidence-based AAC strategies
• Helps caregivers learn how to model, expand, and encourage communication
• Toggle on/off in Settings → Help & Tutorials

17. Apple Watch Companion

LumaVoice includes an Apple Watch companion app for quick communication on the go.

• Access your most-used tiles directly from your wrist
• Tap to speak common phrases without pulling out your phone or iPad
• Manage the Watch app from Settings → Professional Tools → Apple Watch

18. iCloud Sync & Backup

Keep your data safe and synchronized across all your Apple devices.

iCloud Sync

• Automatically syncs custom tiles, settings, and communication history across devices
• Start on iPhone, continue on iPad — everything stays in sync
• Toggle in Settings → Data & Sync

Import & Export

• Backup: Export your complete data (tiles, settings, history) to a file
• Restore: Import a backup file to restore your data on any device
• Access in Settings → Data & Sync

19. Privacy & Security

LumaVoice takes privacy seriously with built-in security features.

App Lock

• Lock the app with Face ID or Touch ID
• Prevents unauthorized access to communication history and settings
• Enable in Settings → Privacy & Security

Data Privacy

• All communication data is stored locally on your device
• iCloud sync uses Apple's encrypted infrastructure
• AI Polish uses encrypted connections and does not store your sentences

20. Languages

LumaVoice supports 4 languages with full tile and interface translations:

Change your language in Settings → Voice & Language. Language changes apply to both the interface and all tile labels instantly.

21. Accessibility

LumaVoice is designed to be accessible for users with a wide range of abilities.

Configure accessibility features in Settings → Accessibility.

22. Subscription Plans

LumaVoice offers a 7-day free trial with full access to every feature. After the trial, choose a plan:

Manage your subscription in Settings → Subscription or through your Apple ID settings.

24. Tips & Best Practices

Getting the Most Out of LumaVoice

1. Start simple — Begin with 2–3 word sentences and gradually build complexity
2. Use predictions — Let Smart Predictions speed up communication
3. Create custom tiles — Add names, favorite places, and frequently used phrases
4. Switch environments — Use Environment Profiles to surface relevant tiles for each setting
5. Enable AI Polish — Let the app handle grammar so you can focus on communicating

For Caregivers & Educators

1. Use Modeling Mode — Demonstrate tile usage before expecting independent communication
2. Track progress — Enable Learning Mode to see which tiles are being mastered
3. Set up Therapy Mode — Use session tracking and goal setting for structured support
4. Review Usage Insights — Monitor communication patterns and celebrate milestones

1. Larger tiles — Use XL or XXL tile size with 2–3 columns for easier targeting
